Under almost any backyard, sidewalk, or park lies an entire society running on a constant rhythm, with no manager, no meetings, and nobody shouting orders — just chemical signals and a division of labor that evolved over more than 100 million years. Ants are among the most studied insects on the planet precisely because they hide engineering, logistics, and agricultural solutions that scientists still draw inspiration from today. 1. A single ant can carry dozens of times its own weight
Worker ants can lift and carry loads equal to 10 to 50 times their own body weight, depending on the species — leafcutter ants, for example, haul leaf fragments far larger than themselves over long distances back to the nest. This seemingly absurd strength comes down to the physics of scale: because an ant’s body is so small, the cross-sectional area of its muscles (which determines strength) shrinks proportionally less than its body volume (which determines weight) as the animal gets smaller. In practice, that means the smaller the insect, the greater its relative strength compared to its own weight — an effect that wouldn’t hold up if an ant were the size of a dog.
2. Ants communicate almost entirely through smell
Unlike humans, who rely heavily on sight and hearing, ants navigate mainly through pheromones — chemical substances released by specific glands that other ants detect with their antennae. This happens because the species lost part of the genetic diversity used to recognize “outsider ants” when it was introduced outside its native habitat, causing colonies from completely different regions to behave as if they were one extended society — a rare phenomenon among social insects, which normally defend their territory aggressively against neighboring colonies.

A study published in 2022 in the journal *PNAS* estimated the world’s ant population at roughly 20 quadrillion individuals, with a total dry biomass close to 12 million metric tons — a figure in the same order of magnitude as the combined biomass of all wild mammals on the planet, and comparable to a significant fraction of total human biomass. That scale helps explain why ants play such an important ecological role: they turn over and aerate soil, disperse seeds, and control populations of other insects across nearly every continent except Antarctica.
Why some species don’t have a single fixed queen
Not every ant species follows the classic model of one queen per colony. Some species, like certain fire ants, keep multiple reproductive queens active simultaneously in the same nest, boosting colony resilience if one queen dies. In other species, worker ants can, under specific circumstances, develop functional ovaries and start laying unfertilized eggs (which only produce males) if the original queen disappears — a last-resort genetic survival strategy biologists still study to understand the limits of these insects’ social flexibility.
What science still studies about collective intelligence
No individual ant “knows” the shortest path to food or how many workers a task requires — that kind of decision emerges from collective behavior, with no single ant ever having a view of the whole picture. Computer scientists call this phenomenon “swarm intelligence,” and they actively study it because ant colonies solve optimization problems in a decentralized way that computer networks often need more processing power to solve centrally.
