Some homes turn into an oven in summer even after the sun goes down — the heat seems stuck to the walls, the bedroom never cools off at night, and pointing a fan straight at your face becomes the only way to tolerate the temperature. This kind of indoor heat isn’t always the outdoor temperature’s fault alone: it has a lot to do with insulation, ventilation, and even the habits of the people living in the space. Understanding where that trapped heat actually comes from makes it possible to address the cause, instead of just compensating for the discomfort with yet another fan that doesn’t really help.
What makes heat build up inside a home

Another habit that makes things worse is leaving light curtains or indoor blinds open under strong sun: indoor coverings block far less heat than outdoor shading, because the glass has already let the heat in before any indoor curtain gets a chance to block anything. Plenty of people also run a fan in a closed room with no other opening, expecting it to “cool the air” — in reality, a fan only creates a wind-chill sensation on the skin, and without cross-ventilation it doesn’t actually lower the room’s temperature. Using the oven or ironing clothes during the hottest hours of the day, instead of saving those tasks for late evening or early morning, also adds unnecessary heat to the space.
How to cool your home down and keep rooms more comfortable
The most effective and cheapest strategy is cross-ventilation: opening windows on opposite sides of the house in the morning and at night creates an airflow that swaps trapped hot air for cooler air, working far better than a single fan sitting in one spot. Shading windows from the outside — with awnings, exterior blinds, or even shade-casting plants — blocks heat before it ever crosses the glass, which is much more effective than any indoor curtain. In that context, a tower fan with strong airflow helps spread the current created by cross-ventilation across the whole room, and a portable evaporative cooler goes a step further, since it actually cools the air as it passes through a moistened pad, making it a cheaper option to buy and run than full air conditioning in rooms that don’t need complete refrigeration. Concentrating the use of heat-generating appliances during the cooler hours of the day and cutting back on incandescent-style artificial lighting also help keep indoor temperatures under control through the summer.
