1. The microwave was born from a melted chocolate bar
In 1945, engineer Percy Spencer was testing radar equipment when he noticed a chocolate bar in his pocket had melted. Intrigued, he investigated the effect of microwaves on heating food — and the microwave oven was born.
2. The Post-it note came from a “bad” glue
A 3M scientist was trying to develop a super-strong adhesive and accidentally created a weak one that peeled off easily instead. Years later, a colleague used that glue to make reusable bookmarks — and the Post-it note was born.
3. Velcro was inspired by sticky plants
In 1941, Swiss engineer George de Mestral noticed how burdock seeds clung to his dog’s fur after a walk. Studying the structure under a microscope, he developed the fastening system we know today.
4. The most famous artificial sweetener was discovered by accident in a lab
Saccharin was discovered in 1879 when a researcher noticed a sweet taste on his own hands after working with chemical compounds — with no intention of creating a sweetener at all.
5. The Slinky almost became scrap before becoming a toy
A naval engineer was developing springs to stabilize equipment on ships when one fell off a shelf and “walked” across the floor on its own. The mesmerizing effect became one of the best-selling toys in history.
